Crowns & Onlays
Crowns and onlays are dental restorations which restore the natural appearance and function of a tooth by repairing decay, cracks and other damage.
While a dental crown completely covers the surface of the tooth, an onlay (also known as a partial crown) covers only part of a tooth. At Village Dental in Great Missenden we have extensive experience in all types of restorative dentistry.

What is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are custom-made restorations that rebuild and protect damaged or weakened teeth. Whether caused by tooth decay, large fillings, or trauma, the top part of a tooth can become compromised.
- A crown is placed over the healthy portion of the tooth to repair and strengthen it, preventing further damage. Crowns are often placed on cracked or root filled teeth to prevent further fracture.
- Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including gold, non-precious metal alloys, and natural-looking materials such as resin, ceramic, or a combination of both.
The treatment itself is generally not painful. Local anaesthesia is often used to numb the area during the procedure, ensuring you are comfortable and free from pain.
What is the Crown Treatment Process?
- The first step in the treatment involves ensuring the tooth is healthy and suitable for a crown.
- Your dentist will prepare the tooth in order to allow space for the selected crown.
- A digital scan will be taken of your teeth to allow the technicians to accurately make the crown, preventing the need for dental impressions!
- During this process, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth while your custom crown is created.
- At your second visit, usually 2-3 weeks later, the new crown will be securely bonded to the prepared tooth.
What is an onlay?
An onlay is often considered a partial crown, offering many of the same benefits as a full-coverage crown, but with less removal of healthy tooth structure.
- Onlays are typically made from materials like gold or ceramic, providing a strong and natural-looking solution for damaged teeth.
- The process for placing an onlay is similar to that of a full crown, but less of the tooth is reduced in size. During your consultation, your dentist will assess your individual needs and recommend the best treatment option to restore your tooth.
