Dental Examinations at Village Dental in Great Missenden
Our primary goal is to have a full understanding of the health of your teeth and gums whilst getting to know you as an individual to tailor our dentistry towards your needs and expectations.
Providing you with a thorough examination and summary of your overall dental health, you will then be able to make informed decisions about your dental treatments.
Not all treatments are suitable for everyone, so we want you to have the knowledge and understanding to be able to take all the necessary steps to prevent problems from occurring in the future.
What to expect during your Dental Examination
- Understanding Your Goals – our clinicians will take the time to listen to you and your concerns or goals.
- A Full History – it is extremely important that we have both a full dental and medical history to help us understand your health requirements. A medical form will be sent to you via email in a digital format prior to your first visit with us.
- Oral Cancer Screen – we will carry out an oral cancer screen followed by a prompt onward referral if required.
- Assessment of your Jaw and Bite – the TMJ (Temperomandibular Joint) and associated muscles and teeth will be assessed for signs of any nocturnal habits of clenching/grinding.
- Teeth and Gums – we will record any existing restorations as well as any chipped, broken, decayed or worn teeth. We will also assess the health of the gums, including plaque levels and check for signs of gum disease.
- Special Investigations – x-rays, photographs and intraoral scans may be required to aid diagnosis and ensure an accurate treatment plan is formulated.
- Your Smile – we want to ensure that you can smile with confidence. Please use this opportunity to enquire about any concerns you may have regarding the colour, alignment or shape of your teeth.
Benefits of Regular Dental Examinations
- They allow us to deliver preventive advice tailored to your oral health needs.
- Dental problems can be picked up early thus avoiding the need for more costly and invasive treatments in the future.
- We can monitor any potential gum issues and signpost you to a visit to the dental hygienist.
- Check-ups are an opportunity to carry out a head, neck, and oral cancer screening.

Dental Examination FAQs
Our recommendations to you regarding the frequency of future dental examinations will be presented to you following your examination and completion of treatment. This is based on a number of factors such as: the amount of pre-existing dentistry, age, risk of future decay or gum disease.
After your initial course of treatment has been completed, we would then be in a position to discuss future recalls with the dentist and the hygienist.
We have a cost effective in-house dental plan to help manage the ongoing routine visits to the Village Dental Practice. For more information on our dental plan please click here Practice Plan
